SpaceX Starship's Seventh Launch: Ship Lost, Booster 'Caught'

The Starship launch vehicle took off from the Starbase cosmodrome in Boca Chica on the night of January 17.01.2025, XNUMX. The booster (first stage), as planned, returned successfully. It was caught by Mechazilla with its own “hands”. Communication with the first stage was lost some time after the launch. The rocket was never able to reach orbit. The SpaceX press service said that the ship was destroyed during the “lift impulse”. The company was broadcasting the launch live, so only the debris of the second stage is visible.

The goals of the seventh test launch are to test repeated launches of the Raptor engines, return the first stage to the cosmodrome, and conduct thermal protection experiments. The launch vehicle with a reusable booster is planned to be used for flights to the Moon. The first launch took place in the spring of 2023 and was unsuccessful: the rocket also collapsed, as it did during the second launch in the fall of the same year. Subsequent tests were carried out as planned.

During the 6th launch in November 2024, Elon Musk said that an unmanned flight to the Moon would be carried out in 4 years. As for today's failure, SpaceX said that "the flight will help make Starship more reliable." And the success of the test is due to "learnings gained."
