"Vasily Golovnin" set off on another expedition to Antarctica

On January 14, the diesel-electric ship Vasily Golovnin, owned by the FESCO transport group, began its seventh expedition to Antarctica. The vessel, managed by the state corporation Rosatom, left the port of Cape Town (South Africa) and headed to the Indian research stations Bharati and Maitri. This mission will last until April 2025.

The main purpose of the flight is to deliver necessary cargo, including fuel, food and equipment: everything that is needed to operate the stations during this year. In addition to the material component, there are also polar explorers from India on board, who will replace their colleagues at the Antarctic stations.

The vessel has modern equipment, including two helicopterThey are used for aerial reconnaissance and delivery of cargo to unequipped areas of the coast.

There is also a self-propelled barge on board, designed for unloading in the coastal zone, where there are no port facilities. Thanks to it, such procedures become possible in principle.

The technical characteristics of the Vasiliy Golovnin are impressive: length 163,9 m, width 22,46 m, draft reaches 9 m. The vessel develops a speed of up to 15,9 knots (about 30 km/h). It is driven by a Wartsila-Sulzer 12ZV 40/48 engine with a capacity of 15500 hp.

Antarctica is considered one of the most challenging regions for shipping. Extreme weather conditions, ice fields and lack of adequate infrastructure require highly qualified crew. The ship is commanded by experienced captain Nikolai Dishkant.

The main difficulty is that most of the cargo has to be delivered to an unequipped shore. In such cases, helicopters and barges are used, which makes the delivery process difficult and dangerous even for experienced polar explorers.

For several years now, the vessel Vasily Golovnin has played a key role in supporting Indian polar research and supporting the life of stations that participate in studying the climate, ecology and geology of the continent.

FESCO, with its extensive experience in polar regions, also supports projects in other countries, including Chile and Argentina. This underlines the importance of international cooperation in the exploration and study of the southern continent.
