Mazda has released the most powerful version of the MX-5

The limited edition of the iconic MX-5 roadster debuted at the Tokyo Motor Show. The modification received the index 12R and became the most powerful Miata in the history of the model.


The limited edition was created in collaboration with Mazda's racing division, Spirit Racing. The Super Endurance series was used as a basis. The team of specialists was inspired by by car #12 MSR who competed in the Japanese Super Taikyu series.

The key upgrade of the roadster can be considered the engine. The power plant is a 2-liter Skyactiv-G unit. The engine power reaches 197 hp. For comparison, the standard version produces almost 20 "horses" less.


The difference may not seem like much. But then again, the Miata's weight is worth remembering. At 1,1 tons, the improvement is quite noticeable.

According to Mazda, key engine components have been modified to increase dynamic performance. In particular, the following components have been replaced:

✅ camshaft
✅ cylinder head
✅ pistons
✅ intake manifold

The new engine is paired with a six-speed manual transmission. In addition to working on the car's "heart", Mazda engineers have also improved other components of the roadster.

The limited edition received a brake system with enlarged ventilated Brembo discs. The suspension was strengthened by adjustable shock absorbers manufactured by Bilstein. In addition, the delivery set will include a set for fine-tuning the angle of the wheels with reinforced silent blocks.

The MX-5's "appearance" was also not ignored. The car received an aerodynamic body kit. It included side skirts, a spoiler and a front splitter. The main body color is the exclusive Aero Gray shade.


The modification is delivered on 17-inch forged Rays wheels. They are shod with Yokohama Advan Neova AD09 racing tires.

The interior features sports seats with Alcantara upholstery. The limited edition also includes optional Recaro bucket seats with four-point seat belts. At the same time, such “civilian” functions as climate control and multimedia systems remain unchanged.

The special edition is limited to 200 units. Unfortunately, the manufacturer does not plan to export the 12R outside of Japan. MX-5 Miata fans from outside the Land of the Rising Sun can only hope for “parallel imports” or purchases through intermediaries.
