New Year's increase in excise tax on fuel in Russia – drivers' opinions

Russian drivers started the new year expecting higher fuel prices. This is inevitable, because excise taxes on gasoline and diesel increased as planned from January 1 of this year. The indexation, accordingly, was 4%.

If this reassures anyone, it is worth recalling the situation last year. Then, the growth of excise taxes was plus 4,9%. That is, the growth dynamics, although slightly, decreased. And this means that there is an obvious improvement.

Despite this, Russian experts expect that prices for gasoline and diesel fuel will grow significantly in 2025. We are talking about a completely different order, the dynamics are predicted at the level of 10-20%. The fact is that the company Transneft recently sharply raised its tariffs. They themselves had to take an unpopular step for objective reasons: the growth of the tax burden.

And here is what Russian drivers think about this:

Personally, I am not surprised at all. Prices are rising for everything. Inflation has not been cancelled. Naturally, fuel should also become more expensive.

– user “solochan” starts the conversation

And I am surprised by the rise in prices. After the introduction of economic sanctions against Russia, gasoline stopped being sent abroad. Accordingly, there is an excess of fuel. And if so, then it should become cheaper. Or at least remain at the same level.

– user “domkom” joins the conversation

I'm more interested in whether anyone will give up their own. car, if the cost of gasoline is from 100 rubles per liter and higher?

– asks user “russianboss”

I won't give up the car in any case, but I'll drive less. On the other hand, it's good, I'll just get rid of pointless trips. And I'll have an excuse to say no to my mother-in-law, for example, more often.

– user “NiktoNezvezdny” is not particularly worried

Gasoline is far from the most important thing. I am more concerned about the rise in prices for spare parts for foreign cars. And paying taxes for cars with more than 250 hp is becoming expensive.

– user “Ilysik1” expressed his opinion

Nobody would refuse a personal car – it’s ridiculous. Our people are ready to work for pennies, but at the same time get there and back by car. And let a quarter of the salary go on gasoline, and a third on spare parts – it’s nothing. The main thing is that you have a car – it means life is good.

– says user “Alexander_Rambler”

Nothing will change for me. Let the fuel prices go up – in percentage terms it’s not much. My salary is indexed every year anyway. Most often I even win, because I grow as a specialist, and accordingly I earn more.

– user "yanlubarski" is happy with everything

Exactly, and whoever complains that he can’t afford gasoline, let him do it on public transport transport rides. And if you really feel sorry for the money, you can move around on foot. And at the same time, you can improve your health for free!

– user “gridseven” ends the conversation.
