What is a gyroplane and its features

Autogyro - what comes to mind when you hear this name? Something to do with cooking or greasy stains on the back of your car? No, you didn't guess. Here we are talking about something completely different. Maybe that's why many fans of this technique prefer to call it by international standards - a gyroplane.

I think it makes much more sense! However, as it is convenient for anyone: both one and the other name are still acceptable in the Russian colloquial language. Interestingly, the first vehicles, called gyroplanes, appeared in our country almost 100 years ago - in 1929. The trial model, its creator N. I. Kamov, simply called it “Red Engineer”. After that, the design bureau led by him managed to create several more such aircraft.

Externally, the autogyro is very similar to a small private helicopter. In principle, the takeoff system is almost the same. Only the gyroplane propeller uses the principle of aerodynamics, rotating in autorotation mode. They were very popular in the 30s, but completely lost their positions with the beginning of mass production of helicopters.

Now, it seems, interest in this unusual device has reappeared. For example, in our country there are several enterprises involved in their design. You will learn more about what a gyroplane is and how it moves in flight from the video on the Konstantin Golota channel.
Which name do you think is better: autogyro or gyroplane?
