The long-gone year of 2019 was marked for the Kama Automobile Plant by the launch of production of a new lorry fifth generation KAMAZ-54901. The car turned out to be successful: many even called it a "bestseller", especially against the backdrop of Chinese cars that filled the market.


This spring, the company also "threw in" an interesting promotion: the inclusion of service maintenance in the price of the purchased truck. This seriously stimulated demand for it. Moreover, the release of a new product, very similar to its predecessor, was unexpected.

The new KAMAZ was first “seen” at COMvex 2023 – one of the largest exhibitions of commercial Transport, held in Moscow. And the first thing that attracted visitors was the good performance of the tractor (up to 11 tons, as part of a road train - 44 tons) with a relatively low weight of 3,5 tons. Here it is appropriate to mention the main technical parameters of the 54902 model:

✅ maximum load on the front and rear axles – 8 and 11 t

The machine is capable of overcoming slopes of up to 18%, the fuel tank holds 700 l.

About the engine and transmission

The new version is equipped with a six-cylinder in-line turbocharged diesel engine KAMAZ-689 with a volume of 8,9 liters, producing 390 "horses", with a torque of 1672 N * m. The engine (in design almost an analogue of Cummins ISLe from the USA) is equipped with a Common Rail fuel system with a mechanical high-pressure pump. Intermediate cooling of the supercharged air is provided. The predecessor is equipped with a KAMAZ-910.12-450 power unit with a capacity of 450 hp. Both engines comply with Euro 5 environmental standards.


The new model is equipped with a robotic gearbox F12JZ22DD+QHG50B with twelve gears, supplemented by a retarder. They did not forget about the leading rear axle (made in China, from Hande): a unit with an optimal gear ratio was selected. It is assumed that it will contribute to fuel economy.


The cabin is the K5 generation from Mercedes-Benz and is distinguished by a high level of comfort, its width is 1,15 m. There is a berth equipped with an orthopedic mattress. Considering the harsh climatic conditions of Russia, an autonomous heater with a capacity of 3 kW is provided. And for easier engine starting in severe frost - a pre-heater.

Purpose and comparison with 54901

While its predecessor is positioned as a truck for long-distance cargo transportation, its "descendant" 54902 is designed for regional transportation up to a thousand kilometers. However, the functionality of the new truck is the same: including dynamic and traction characteristics. The differences are slightly lower engine power, its volume and cabin (it is slightly lower). And the 902nd is capable of carrying 1,4 tons more cargo, which became possible due to the reduced curb weight, which is 7,75 tons, and a lighter cabin. While the previous model has a weight of 9,15 tons.


At the same time, according to the manufacturer, the cost of the 902 is "ten percent" less. On the official website, the 901 costs from 7 million 900 thousand rubles, its successor - from 7 million 600 thousand. Something does not look like 10%. True, there are KAMAZ-54901 models with an unspecified price. Maybe it is less?

The first eleven then experimental KAMAZ-54902 trucks were assembled in June of this year. The vehicle has been on the assembly line since August. The first vehicles have already been shipped to the customer. It is expected that at least 2024 units will be manufactured by the end of 1900.
