New generation of Volkswagen Passat unveiled – including improved Pro version

Volkswagen presented the new generation Passat sedan. car will be released in two versions - regular and with the Pro prefix.


The model is intended only for sales on the domestic Chinese market. It is produced at a local joint venture – SAIC Volkswagen. After all, in the EU and the USA, the Passat sedan has long been discontinued.

But on the market in the Celestial Empire, this model continues to enjoy stable demand. So the manufacturer is developing new generations especially for the Chinese. They differ from the standard Passat primarily by their elongated bodies and a variety of options.


The prices are already known. The base car will cost from 22,5 thousand dollars (2,05 million rubles). As for the "top" version in the Pro version, it will cost more than twice as much. For such a car you will have to pay 43,5 thousand dollars (3,96 million rubles).

Externally, the regular Passat is no different from the Pro version. But the manufacturer presented sedans with two different designs of the front part of the body. The first is the Pioneer Edition. It has a radiator grille with horizontal stripes - like the previous generation model. The second is the Starry Sky Edition. Its radiator grille is designed as a grid.

Such design solutions are available for both regular Passat and Pro versions. Whether the design of the front of the cars will affect the price is still unknown.

The new Volkswagen Passat is a full-size sedan. Judging by the dimensions of 5 x 1,85 x 1,48 meters length, width and height, respectively, the car rather claims to be a premium class, not even a business one.

Technically, all versions of the new Volkswagen Passat are identical. Under the hood, they have the only alternative 2,0-liter turbo petrol engines with a capacity of 220 hp. The power units are manufactured in China, but these are Volkswagen engines, known under the EA888 index and produced since 2006.

They have proven themselves to be quite reliable. Of course, you shouldn't expect the ease of maintenance and repair of naturally aspirated engines from the 90s from the EA888 TSI series. But this is a problem with most modern power units from other manufacturers.


The engine of the new Volkswagen Passat sedans works in tandem with a 7-speed robotic gearbox without alternatives. Again, the popular and well-known DSG series unit in our country. It is expensive and difficult to repair, but owners of new cars do not have to worry about this.

The Passat Pro is richly equipped. It has three screens in the cabin instead of two, a more powerful media system, wireless charging for gadgets and premium Harman Kardon acoustics.
