BMW and Bosch are working on a hydrogen tank for cars

BMW is confident that the future is not only for classic electric cars, but also for hydrogen cars. In fact, these are the same models that are "not tied to outlets." That is, they are charged by the reaction of hydrogen with oxygen.

Modern tanks on cars have a traditional cylindrical shape. This does not make it possible to make them as voluminous as possible. The flat containers that BMW and Bosch are currently working on will solve this problem.



The manufacturer claims that the new form will also help to significantly save on cost - this is very important for the end buyer.

Having received hydrogen fuel cells, electric cars will become independent, and their power reserve will increase several times. It is these technologies that will allow replacing diesel trucks for new models.

BMW says the new flat tank design will be ready by the end of 2022. It turns out that it is not worth waiting for them on the hydrogen model i Hydrogen Next, made on the basis of the BMW X5. After all, a small batch of crossovers should go on sale before the end of this year.

Hydrogen cars have a number of advantages over classic electric cars. For example, they refuel in less than 4 minutes. The power reserve due to the use of hydrogen and special tanks does not depend on weather conditions - it is the same in harsh winters and hot summers.

BMW has been testing such cars for a long time. In 2015, a small pilot batch of the BMW 5 Series GT hydrogen fuel cell was released. Even then they had a power reserve of more than 500 km.

The BMW i Hydrogen Next concept car was shown back in 2019. At that time, the manufacturer did not have its own hydrogen fuel tanks capable of withstanding pressures up to 700 bar, so Toyota had to turn to Toyota for help.



The BMW i Hydrogen Next, which debuts in 2022, is expected to be a pioneer in hydrogen vehicles, according to BMW. Its main task is to show the consumer the advantage of such engines.

According to preliminary forecasts, mass models of hydrogen cars should appear in Europe in 2025. But if buyers show interest in them, it is possible that before.

The most important thing is the reduction in prices for hydrogen cars and the development of a network of specialized gas stations.
