Divertors, refuges and chicanes - what are they planning to introduce on Russian roads

The Ministry of Transport ordered the development of an updated pedestrian safety standard from the Russian Road Research Institute. The project is expected to be reviewed and approved by the end of this year. The regulation introduces several new terms to designate structures that will be used to reduce the number of accidents involving pedestrians.

According to the engineers, the innovations will slow down cars when driving in dangerous areas, which will allow you to react to emerging dangers in a timely manner. But many structures have come out with criticism, including traffic police experts.

GOST was developed back in 2020. Since then, it has gone through 3 editions, the updated version has some interesting innovations.
It is proposed to raise the level of the road at intersections by 8 cm in order to slow down the traffic flow. At the same time, it is planned to limit the speed by indicators from 20 to 40 km.

One method of slowing down vehicles can be to narrow the road in front of areas of heavy pedestrian traffic or reduce the width of the lanes. It is also supposed to use chicanes - elements of road architecture that force the driver to zigzag, thereby reducing speed. This option will be implemented on roads with low traffic intensity.

The new GOST limits the speed near pedestrian crossings. In a residential area no more than 20 km / h, on city streets - 30, on local roads - 40 and on highways - 70.

It is assumed that divertors will appear - elements that block the direct passage of the intersection. Another innovation is the refug. This is the name of the structure installed in front of the safety islands and protecting pedestrians who are there from being hit by a car. Such structures will also be equipped with light signaling to attract attention.

Many new items have drawn criticism from the traffic police. So, chicanes, according to representatives of the department, can cause many accidents, especially at first. The idea of raised intersections and pedestrian crossings is questionable, as vehicles with low ground clearance will experience problems when passing through such elements.

It is supposed to form commissions to discuss innovations, as well as to conduct a number of practical experiments to verify the effectiveness of the designs.
